QUESTION: Hey Sean! My name is Danny and I'm 13 years old. I was wondering if there is a chance for a thirteen year old to get sponsored by Spyder for Big Mountain skiing. If there is could you let me know how and what the best type of training is for that kind of shredding? Thanks. have a good spring.
ANSWER: Hey Danny, Stoked to hear a young gun like yourself is aspiring to be a sponsored big mountain skier! The answer to your question is Yes! For a shredder your age the door is wide open. You still have plenty of time to step your game up and start getting your name out there. To be a sponsored athlete you've got to set yourself ahead of the pack. Their are lot of ways to do so. What I would suggest is simply to ski as much as possible. The more you get up on the hill, the more second nature it all becomes. While on the hill you should practice being a well rounded skier, It's important to be comfortable in all conditions, and situations. As a big mountain skier, you've got to be able to ski all different types of terrain. You should shredd everything from Steep groomers, to moguls, to off piste, to the park. Once you've conquered the basics of the mountain, you will most likely be more comfortable on the hill than most thirteen year olds. From here, you should look into entering yourself into a Junior Big Mountain Event. I know there are a few events out in Colorado. This would be a great experience for you to gain knowledge, and see what it takes. It's also good to have on your resume when approaching a sponsor. The last thing I could tell you is probably the most important part so listen carefully. "Attitude is everything" It is extremely important to keep a positive attitude, you've got to look at the positive side of things, and never forget that the reason we're all here is because skiing is fun! Go buy the book "Mind Gym" An athlete guide to inner excellence by Gary Mack and David Casstevens. That should keep you busy over the summer. I hope this helps answer your questions, feel free to ask me more if you need. Have a great spring and summer, and I'll see you shredding next season. Shredd the Gnarr! Sean

QUESTION: Hey Tyson! A couple of days ago I asked you what I should do for summer training. I'm 13 years old so I'm too young to go to the gym unless I take a $100 class. What else do you think that I should do to get stronger because I'm already pretty flexible? Also, what component should I work the most on? Cardio, Muscular Strength, Muscular endurance or flexibility? Thanks. have a good summer.
ANSWER: Danny, I am happy to hear that you are so eager to get stronger. As far as your focus for the summer months, you need to try and build a body mass you can handle by integrating all aspects of a workout into your day. When I say workout, it does not mean you have to go to the gym. Given your body is still growing at 13 you don't need to work on you muscle strength as much as you need to work on using all your muscles. If I can recommend a few activities you can do on your own I would start with your core. Sit-up, crunches, leg lifts, etc. Do anything that works your stomach and lower back. Then work on your legs and cardio at the same time by doing sprints up short hills around your house. This will work you legs, cardiovascular, and agility. I would avoid paying to use a gym if you can as there are plenty of things you can do at your age to get strong. Go to a book store and look for a book called "Ski Training" by Ellen Post Foster. There is a whole bunch of things in there that you can do with objects or obstacles you can probably find around the neighborhood. Remember, your CORE is the most important. Get one of those big bouncy balls and a book of workouts with it, and get after it. Remember, beach muscles make you awkward in the air, so no curls-for-the-girls. Take care.

QUESTION: Hey Tyson I want to get good at freestyle skiing but Breck, Copper and Kestone are closed after today. What so you think I should do over the summer for some training. Thanks P.S. I don't have a tramp but my friend does.
ANSWER: Danny, There are many ways to train these days, but the most important thing to focus on is strength and flexibility.. I am not sure how old you are but I would recommend spending some time in the gym combined with trips to places like the Woodward Center in Copper, CO. If you can come up with the time and funding to make it to a ski camp this summer, like Mt. Hood or some place like that, it would be a great call. However, the biggest thing is focusing on and I can not stress enough is strength and flexibility. If you are strong and flexible, when it comes time to learn new tricks you can get up and try again and again. Good luck, ~Tyson Bolduc

QUESTION: Hey Thomas! What do you think I should do if I just started park skiing? I'm trying to get a 360 down but I just can't get it because I always go shifty. Thanks.
ANSWER: Hi Danny It's best to start learning your rotations on a trampolin. If you wanna do it on snow directly just start of with a clean 180. If you have those under control just keep looking around over your shoulder until you spot the landing again. Give a harder rotationimpulse on the take-off. Do that, practice a lot and you'll get it down. Cheers Tom
